Haut-Lac International Bilingual School
Haut-Lac International Bilingual School, located in St-Légier-La Chiésaz, has been successfully educating both local and expatriate children since it was established with just 13 primary students in 1993. Having grown into one of the biggest private schools on the Riviera with an enrolment of around 650 students aged 3-18 years representing nearly 50 different nationalities, it continues to maintain the family atmosphere encouraged by founders Anne-Marie and Neil Harwood and Grainne and Jean-Louis Dubler who remain at the helm.
In the infant and primary school, classes are taught in English and French on alternate days, in the secondary school most subjects can be studied in either language. An experienced team of teaching staff with backgrounds in both the Anglophone and French-speaking educational systems ensures that the aim of promoting multilingualism can be fulfilled. Another aspect of the school’s mission is the provision of learning experiences that are relevant to the 21st century. In this context, the use of new technologies is integrated into all teaching processes.
In addition to the academic side, the extra-curricular experiences of the students are important. Sporting, creative and charitable activities and projects are promoted from an early age, and are invaluable in providing the students with many opportunities for developing their skills and interests. This includes stimulating their awareness of issues in the world around them and giving them the confidence to become involved.
The secondary school left its original location in Vevey and settled in renovated premises in St-Légier in 2004. The buildings were extended over time to provide specialist science and technology laboratories, a library and study rooms. The infant and primary classes followed in 2014, moving into a purpose-built eco-friendly campus nearby. This includes a triple gym and a large hall with a stage that doubles as the school dining room, and has opened new horizons for the future development of Haut-Lac.
